Have you ever bought two different sized wheelsets for your mullet bike?
With Light Bicycle you don’t have to do that. Contact our customer
support team and we’ll help you order just the wheels you need for your
mullet bike.
Mullet wheelsets are a combination of two different wheel sizes in one
wheelset to change the riding characteristics of a bike. Mullet bikes
have been around since the creation of the iconic Penny-Farthing and
have continued to evolve with the introduction of new wheel sizes. With
mountain bikes, the combination started with a 26 inch wheel in the
front and a 24 inch wheel in the back. Currently, the most common mullet
combination is a 29 inch front wheel and a 650B rear wheel. This is done
to make a bike feel snappy, nimble and playful.
Mullet wheels combine the smooth rolling of a larger front wheel with
the playfulness of a smaller and lighter rear wheel.
Never heard of a mullet bike? Here's some more information.
Larger wheels roll over obstacles better providing a smoother ride and a
larger contact patch for more grip. 29er wheeled bikes were introduced
due to the low attack angle and the amount of traction those wheels
offer. This ushered in a new generation of bigger wheels, longer bikes
and slacker head tube angles. Though stable and predictable, this new
generation left some riders yearning for a more lively and playful bike.
This is where mullet bikes come in.
Swapping out the rear wheel for a smaller diameter 650B (27.5) rim
brings back the playful feel that was missing, by slackening out the
head tube angle, lowering the bottom bracket, and decreasing the
effective length of the bike. Combining 29er and 650B wheels together
provides the rolling benefits of a larger wheel while making the rear
end of the bike feel lively and fast around tight corners.
The major drawbacks with mullet bikes is the need to purchase two
wheesets from retailers since they only stock 29er wheelsets or 650B
wheelsets without offering customization services to make the wheelest
you need. Here at Light Bicycle, every wheelset is custom built to order
meaning we can make the wheelset combination you want!
Is a mullet bike for you?
There are a lot of factors to consider when contemplating a mullet
wheelset. The
most important factors are, “Will this fit on my bike?” and “Is this a
manufacturer approved modification?”
The first step is to contact your bike manufacturer to determine if this
modification is suited for your bike. If it is safe then see if you can
borrow a
rear wheel from a friend and give it a try. If you enjoy the ride
characteristics then it’s time to purchase a new wheelset and start
riding!
Do you want a high end, carbon 29er front wheel and a 650B rear wheel?

As the proud owner of the pictured mullet bike, I am very happy with my wheelset. I would have had to order two wheelsets anywhere else, but I got to custom order a complete mullet set. Thank you LightBicycle :)

Hello,
I am looking for your help in complete wheel selection.
I have a new Scott Scale 920 (2021) 29er with Syncros X-25 / 32H / 25mm wheels. I am making a switch from an older Giant Talon (27.5)
My riding style:
1. Like to go long distances mixing road (45%) and trail (30%), with plenty of freedom to get into the woods and explore off the beaten path (25-30%).
2. Don't always enjoy climbs, but want to get it over with quickly on roads, and get up more technical terrain with ease.
Geography: Currently ride in Europe, but will move to Mumbai soon where it will take about 15k of road riding to get to and area where there’s everything from steep climbs to single track trails, and downhill sections to dense forest with no trails.
My weight: 67kg
I want the lightest wheelset possible that can withstand Mumbai roads (9 of 10 roads are littered with potholes) and the trails.
In order of preference I am considering:
1) XC925-30w-23d (Flywt + Standrd, I9Hydra, 15/110mm BOOST, 12/148mm BOOST,32H, SRAM XD, Sapim CX-Ray)
2) RM29C19-30W-25d
My questions:
1) Based on my current bike specs, are either of these possible?
2) Should I do Standard Front and Rear if I go with the XC925?
3) Are colored i9 Hydra hubs available in colors from the Europe warehouse?
4) Are the Onyx Vesper hubs available from the Europe Warehouse?
5) What questions should I be asking? What am I missing?
I really appreciate your help on this!

Hi Russell,
What would be the tires that you plan to use? Did I notice that you also plan to ride a bit of downhill? The XC925 is for 29er XC riding mostly. Will you do some jumps and falls?
Thanks,
Lightbicycle
