Build Your MTB Berd Spoke Wheelset

Berd spokes are an excellent upgrade for MTB riders seeking the lightest, fastest wheels without compromising durability and strength. Now available on our premier models—including the Helios XC928, XC930, AM930, XC930 Plus, AM930S, and ANAX32—the revolutionary spokes deliver an ultra-lightweight profile alongside superior vibration damping.

Berd spokes are made from an advanced polymer called ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) that has 15 times the strength-to-weight ratio of steel and floats on water. Berd spokes have an improved fatigue life compared to steel and are impervious to the elements.

In fact, Berd spokes have earned their place at the pinnacle of competitive cycling. With two Olympic Gold Medals, two Olympic Bronze Medals, and over 50 XC World Cup podiums in the last 2 seasons, Berd spokes are the winningest XC MTB spokes in the world. Building with Berd requires more than just tools — it requires mastery. With LB’s rigorous quality control and deep technical expertise, you can enjoy the benefits of Berd spokes with total peace of mind. Upgrade your MTB wheels with Berd spokes and unlock unprecedented performance now.

Berd Spokes - FAQs

  • 1. What riding discipline are Berd spokes for?

Berd spokes can be used for a wide variety of disciplines, but we feel they are best suited for performance-oriented MTB and CX/Gravel bike wheels. Click here to find your perfect match of CX/Gravel wheels.

  • 2. Do Berd spokes come with a warranty?

Berd offers a 5-year warranty on their PolyLight spokes to be free from defects in material and workmanship, from the date of purchase. The final decision of whether the product is defective will be made by Berd. Please note that the warranty does NOT cover damages resulting from improper use, neglect, misuse, or alteration of the spokes.

  • 3. How much weight will I save over metal spokes?

As the lightest spokes on the market, Berd spokes weigh only 2.5 grams, compared to 4.8 grams for the popular Sapim CX-Ray, for example. On an MTB wheelset of 56 or 64 spokes, that quickly adds up to about 120 grams difference.

  • 4. Are Berd spokes stronger than steel spokes?

Berd spokes have 12 times the strength-to-weight ratio of steel spokes, and they provide 200% better vibration damping than metal spokes.

  • 5. Do Berd spokes have a weight limit?

Technically speaking, there is no weight limit on Berd spokes. For heavier MTB riders hitting aggressive, technical terrain, the spokes won't be your bottleneck, but your rims might be. If you’re a heavier CX/Gravel rider or are looking for a bikepacking setup with a load of gear, you’ll want to choose a heavy-duty rim for added support.

  • 6. Are there only XC models available?

No, we also have EN and DH models available. If you need Berd PolyLightX Extreme Spokes designed specifically for DH and eMTBs, contact us.

  • 7. Are colored Berd spokes available?

We currently stock black and white Berd spokes. No further color options are available, but coloring kits (applicable for white spokes only) can be purchased directly from Berd.

  • 8. How to clean Berd spokes?

We recommend using a high-quality dish soap and water, along with some elbow grease. Do not use harsh solvents or cleaning supplies on your spokes.

  • 9. Can I replace Berd spokes or do the maintenance myself?

Technically, yes, but you will need special tools, which can be purchased directly from Berd. We recommend visiting your local bike shop and consulting a certified mechanic for help.

Light Bicycle : Light Bicycle Anax 32 // Berd Spoke// Erase Component
BH : Make no mistake, the Helios XC928 rims build into an absolutely incredible set of wheels for your bike! Admittedly I'm a Light Bicycle fan, currently using eight different sets of LB rims (different generations and families and bike types), and building up dozens of other pairs for friends, and I haven't had a single issue with any of them. LB had great timing with their Helios rims, as I was starting to plan a new set of wheels for a coming bike. I love my XC930 and AR25 wheelsets, but ideally wanted something just slightly narrower than the XC930 but slightly wider and a touch stiffer than the AR25. The Helios jumps right into that spot BUT it's lighter and stiffer than either, and looking closely at the new construction, I am convinced it's absolutely more durable for the long run as well! It keeps the beautiful paintless finish that other manufacturers should be jealous of. I don't usually trust others to build my wheels, but considering the amazing job LB did on my recent Aria wheels, I decided I'd have them handle the build. The LB team was great to work with, setting me up with exactly the build I was looking for. I went with the more unique Erase hook hubs, to complement Berd spokes and Sapim nipples. Now I did have to wait a touch longer for the wheels, but I can understand given these were absolutely new rims just starting to be built. The LB team was amazing at keeping me updated and answering any questions along the way. On the scale, the build was a wild 997grams! And on the trail... well, LB has certainly worked some magic with these rims! Laterally stiff with minimal deflection, while retaining this impressive and subtle compliance through the ride. They accelerate and change directions in the way only a wheelset this light, and good, can. It says a lot to me, when you can throw a wheelset this light on your bike, and other than the lightness and responsiveness, not have to "think" about them again for a few hundred offroad miles so far! Thanks Light Bicycle!

Is it possible to make the AR56-30 wheels in a flyweight version? I weigh 73 kg.

LightBicycle 2024/04/30

Hi James, Thanks for your inquiry! Sorry for the late reply. It is okay to manufacture AR56 rims road disc 700C around 30g lighter for you. Does it work for you? What tire width and tire pressure will you ride? Do you ride aggressively? Thanks, Lightbicycle

Hi, I would like an ultra-light disc brake climbing wheelset. I'm 80kg, so no flyweight option, please. It would be AR25 Rim, Carbon Spoke with either Extralite SPD3 or CarbonTi. Can I get a quote with full specs for these builds?

LightBicycle 2023/10/09

Hi Sun, Thanks for reaching out! We have sent the quote through an email, please check it. Best regards, Light Bicycle

Hi I would like an ultra light climbing wheelset but I am 85 Kilos so no flyweight options. Berd Spoked no Depth Rim with Extralite hubs can you build that? Regards, Christopher Tan

LightBicycle 2023/04/18

Hi Christopher, Hi Christopher, Thanks for reaching out! Given the fact that you are looking for a climbing wheelset. Berd spokes won't be the best fit here. It would be too compliant. The stiffness would be a key to consider when it comes to climbing. So carbon spokes make more sense. The new flyweight carbon spokes are actually better in tensile strength compared to steel spokes. It provides better stiffness. And the butted version is lighter than Berd spokes in some cases like 270mm. It's 2.3g each and Berd spokes are 2.5g on average. Build with Extralite hubs, they would be super light. Have you figured out the rims you like to build with yet? 35mm would be a sweet spot for both climbing and tarmac. Or are you looking for our AR25 super lightweight wheelset? Thanks, Lightbicycle
